Michael Cermak hit back-to-back home runs to lead Heritage past visiting West 9-1 on Monday.
Heritage (11-7, 4-4 District 4-AAA) started slow in Monday's district matchup against West. The Mountaineers got two hits in the first inning, and West (9-8, 2-3) scored in the top of the second inning when Tyler Waddell's shot to left field drove in Will Chesney.
Freshman pitcher Trevor Clifton kept a lid on West's momentum, however. He recorded nine strikeouts for the Mountaineers. Clifton opened the game by snagging a line drive from the first batter and then striking out West's designated hitter Jonathon Rhodes.
Behind Clifton's pitches and Heritage's defense, the Mountaineers allowed West just three hits.
